THE THAW

The Thaw is a sci-fi horror/thriller film directed by Mark A. Lewis starring Val Kilmer (Dr. Kruipen, the leader of the expedition) and Martha MacIsaac(his daughter Evelyn, one of the students).

At a far-off Arctic research base, four ecology students led by a renowned environmental activist encounter the true terror of global warming is not the melting ice, but what's frozen within it when they unearth the completely preserved remnants of a frozen wooly mammoth and uncover that an very old parasite has been incubating within the monster for centuries. They must by some means destroy the parasite before it reaches the rest of civilization. Dr. David Krupien (Val Kilmer) is examining a melting ice cap in the Arctic when he uncovers a prehistoric parasite which scientists have never seen before. Thrilled by the possibilities of such a remarkable discovery, Dr. Krupien hurriedly summons four of his brightest students to the base to take part in the excavation. Soon after extracting the heavy primitive animal from the ice, the students are besieged by a swarm of unknown insects that burrow deep into the flesh, and lay eggs in their host to reproduce. With each new infection, the prospect of containing the parasitic nuisance decreases. Now, trapped in the Arctic with their numbers rapidly falling, the hopeless students realize that their only hope of preventing the specimen from reaching the civilization is to quarantine the center, even if it costs them their lives.

It is like The Thing (1982, John Carpenter) The X-Files: Ice (1993, David Nutter). It is rated R for violence, disturbing images, language and brief sexuality. The Thaw was released on 6th October 2009 in USA and Canada.
